We have a new addition to our family. On September 6th, we added a third little girl to our family. She has been a joy and a blessing!

In the attempt to get just the right shot (especially when photographing children), I often end up with what I call the “real life” shots. The sillies, the tears, the pouts. And I can’t help it—I always love them. Because as a mother, I know all too well how quickly these years go and how easily we forget some of those moments or those faces. When photographing my oldest, my six-year-old, this summer, I “forced” her out into an overgrown area where she encountered grasshoppers. And this is how she felt about it:
As cute and adorable as she is in the following pictures, they just don’t tell the story that the first two do. And while we all love cute and adorable (they are so much fun to frame and hang), photography to me is about a story and about remembering. In twenty years from now, I’ll remember the sweet little smiles (they’ll be hanging on my walls, after all), but I also want to be able to look at that picture of her fretting about bugs and remember the little whimper she did. As hard as it is for me to believe now, I think I’ll want to remember that pout (and will find it so much more adorable!). I say it all the time—a photo session shouldn’t be just about getting perfect pictures (although we hope for a few of those!), it should also be about making and capturing memories.

We had a photo session on this young man’s birthday…pretty cool that he didn’t mind spending part of an important day getting snapshot after snapshot for his senior pictures. I felt blessed to meet such a nice young gentleman and I enjoyed some of the unique shots we took, including some with a prized possession of his—his grandfather’s truck! I played around a bit in post-production and added a few artistic finishes on some of them, so hopefully he doesn’t mind my interpretations!
He even had the shirt to go with the theme—it was perfect!

These last few were just a fun way to end our shoot—on the warm beach on a sunny Saturday in August.
The sessions for October 1st have filled up, so I have added additional sessions on Friday, September 30th. 15 minute sessions are available starting at 9:45 until noon. Email or call soon to reserve a slot!
The Sept. 30th sessions will be held in Grand Rapids at the Old Central School.
In the spirit of “non-traditional” schooling, I am offering non-traditional school portraits for students. While this special is aimed at home schooling families, all families are welcome to schedule a session.
This year’s session will be offered at the Robert J. Elkington Middle School in Grand Rapids, MN on Saturday, October 1st, 2011.
Currently, sessions are available to be scheduled every 15 minutes between 9am and 12pm. (Additional times and dates may be scheduled if these sessions fill up.)
Each 10 minute session is $10/child (all ages welcome, up to age 18). Sibling groups can be photographed at no extra charge if each child has paid a $10 session fee. Each child’s session will result in 5 edited proofs that will be available for viewing online and ordering 2 weeks after the session (click on link below for packages and ordering details). There is no obligation to order images. Schedule your session now by emailing or calling.
Somehow I get fortunate enough to take pictures of the nicest people, including this young man. In addition to such a nice smile and a great personality, he was such a trooper as his mom and I drove him around to various locations with promises of, “Just a few more!” It paid off, in my opinion—I had a hard time choosing just a few favorites to post on here.

Mike and Sara got married on a perfect June day in northern MN at Sara’s family cabin. The sky was blue, it was the perfect temperature, and they had planned their special day around fun, family, and friends.
It was the kind of wedding that people didn’t want to leave. Besides the beautiful day, there were fun details like the canoe full of beverages and the pontoon available for rides.
The couple were relaxed and made their guests feel the same way.
There was absolutely no lack of laughter!
Mike & Sara….congrats on your wedding (finally, as your guests joked!). Best wishes for a future filled with all the wonderful things that your wedding day had—fun, family, friends, and laughter!
This beautiful young lady is going to be a senior this year. We were fortunate to keep our scheduled session, which is something like a miracle in June in Minnesota—you never know when storm clouds and rain will ruin a perfectly good day for a photo shoot! I had an absolute blast with her—she is quick to smile and laugh and was a natural in front of the camera! Oh, and did I mention her gorgeous blue eyes?!
I had to get a picture with the family dog—isn’t he the cutest?!
